Fly Agaric Mushroom: Appearance

The Fly Agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria) is a large, distinctive fungus that can be found in many temperate regions of the world. It is easily recognizable for its bright red cap with white spots. The mushrooms typically grow up to 8 inches tall and have thick, white stems.

Toxicity

Fly Agaric mushrooms are poisonous and should not be consumed under any circumstances. Symptoms of ingestion include vomiting, sweating, dilated pupils, confusion, dizziness, and hallucinations.

Psychoactive Properties

Although highly toxic in its raw form, it has been used throughout history as a psychoactive substance. When prepared properly through drying or boiling the toxins are partially removed and it can be ingested safely. It is believed to produce feelings of euphoria and spiritual enlightenment.

The Fly Agaric mushroom has held a significant place in many cultures around the world for centuries. In some Native American cultures it was believed to be a sacred plant with medicinal properties.
