What is Krachai Dum?
Krachai Dum is a member of the ginger family native to Thailand, where it has been used for centuries in traditional herbal medicine. Unlike culinary ginger, the rhizome has a distinctive deep purple-black interior, giving rise to the names Black Ginger and Thai Black Ginger.
Traditionally, it has been valued as a herb for vitality, endurance and healthy ageing. Today it has become increasingly popular among athletes, biohackers and herbal enthusiasts as scientific research continues to investigate its effects on exercise performance, circulation and metabolic health.
A Long History of Traditional Use
In Thailand, Krachai Dum has long been regarded as a tonic herb.
Traditional practitioners have used it to support:
- Physical stamina
- Energy and vitality
- Healthy circulation
- General wellbeing
- Male vitality
It has also developed a reputation among Muay Thai practitioners, where it has traditionally been consumed before training and competition.
While traditional use provides valuable historical context, modern researchers are now beginning to investigate many of these traditional applications using contemporary scientific methods.
Why We Like It
One thing we appreciate about Krachai Dum is that it bridges traditional herbal knowledge and modern wellness.
It isn't a harsh stimulant and it isn't intended to replace caffeine. Instead, many people use it as part of a daily routine to support an active lifestyle.
The powdered rhizome has a pleasant earthy flavour with gentle spicy notes, making it easy to add to smoothies, herbal teas or capsules.
How to Use
Most people simply mix around 1–1.5 grams (approximately half to one teaspoon) into warm water, tea or a smoothie.
Because it is traditionally used as a daily tonic rather than a one-off herb, many people prefer using it consistently for several weeks.
