This rare species is regarded by Xhosa Shamans of the South African region as a type of "Ubulawu" or medicinal root that they call "Undela Ziimhlophe," which translates to "white paths" or white ways." They believe this species invokes powerful, vivid and prophetic lucid dreams and allows them to communicate with ancestors.
It is suspected that this plant's effects are due to triterpenoid saponins contained within its roots. Small amounts of root (approx 250 mg) are reported to be active. The plant produces only minimal effects upon waking consciousness, yet its effects on the dream state can be profound.
Traditionally a 1/2 teaspoon is mixed with 1/2 cup water and drunk upon waking in morning on empty stomach. The actives are active in this amount. Larger amounts will have a purgative action.
