Ethnobotanical History: The berries of this deciduous plant, whose Chinese name literally translates into “five flavor berry,” have been used as a powerful adaptogen, cognitive enhancer, mood lifter, energizer and sex stimulant in China for over 2000 years. Whether you're too tired or too nervous, Schisandra may redirect you from an extreme to an ideal, balanced state. Schisandra may also provide additional medicinal benefits. The Chinese have long considered Schisandra a sexual tonic.
Active Constituents: Schizandrin A and Gomisin A.
Usage: 1/2 gram per day steeped in hot water. Traditionally, the berries were soaked in water for several hours prior to use to remove tannin's. A famous traditional Chinese preparation soaks them in wine after the water, and the berries are enjoyed with the wine.
Warning: Not suitable for pregnant women or people with epilepsy or liver conditions. This herb is considered a stimulant and should be taken earlier in the day to avoid sleep interruption.
