Description: A glabrous annual herb rising from a taproot, 20-70cm tall.
Ethnobotanical History: Coriander has been cultivated for at least 3000 years. It is an ingredient in Absinthe. Also used in Betel Nut packages. Used in Iran in folk medicine as a remedy for anxiety and insomnia. The fumes are claimed to cause uncontrollable laughter, reverie and hallucinations. Used as an aphrodisiac by the Egyptians. The Greeks added it to warm wine as a lust potion. Used in TCM to relieve nausea and stomach ache. Used in India to reduce the effects of alcohol. Has sedative-hypnotic properties.
Active Constituents: d-linalool, limonene, a-pinene, b-pinene, camphor, camphene, myrcene and other compounds.
