Amino Acids

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins - hundreds of amino acids linked together form a chain of polypeptides, which forms a protein. Certain amino acids are turned into neurotransmitters in the brain, which are chemical substances that transmit impulses from one neuron to another.

Arginine

Semi-essential amino acid involved in stress management, the release of growth hormone. Supports liver and alcohol recovery. Used as an aphrodisiac and in sports formulas.

Cysteine

Supports the immune system and helps protect the body from toxins including alcohol and tobacco smoke. We supply N-Acetyl cysteine (NAC), which is a more stable form of L-cysteine and a powerful antioxidant. The labrats here @ MindFuel reported after numerous experiments that taking 600mg NAC with Vit C & B6 one hour before drinking alcohol, is the most effective hangover preventative and/or cure they have ever experienced. Buy NAC online!

Glutamine

Glutamine is a stimulating amino acid, increasing neural activity and supporting concentration, learning and memory.

Glycine

Calming, slows the CNS and helps one fall asleep. Helps protect liver from alcohol damage.

L-Dopa

L-Dopa is converted into the neurotransmitters dopamine and noradrenalin in the brain (prescription medicine in NZ).

Phenylalanine

L-Phenylalanine is a precursor for tyrosine. It also produces dopamine and nor-adrenaline. Boosts mood and energy and releases growth hormone. DL-Phenylalanine (DLPA) is an endorphin precursor and said to be a powerful anti-depressant. Buy L-Phenylalanine and DLPA online!

Taurine

Calming, supports metabolism, nerve impulses. Buy Taurine online!

Tryptophan (and 5-HTP)

Used by the brain to make the inhibitory neurotransmitter serotonin. Mood lifting, supports sleep. Tryptophan is restricted to 100mg in NZ (why?), which makes finding supplements difficult, as most overseas made supplements are 500mg. 5-HTP is available unrestricted in NZ as dietary supplement.

Tyrosine

Energizing amino-acid. Used to make nor-adrenaline. Involved in growth hormone release. Cocaine addicts have claimed that Tyrosine helped them quit and/or eased the withdrawal. Buy L-Tyrosine 500mg tablets or powder supplement online!

Sourcing Amino Acids in New Zealand

Most Amino acids can be purchased as dietary supplements in New Zealand. 5-HTP, DLPA, Glutamine Glycine, L-Phenylalanine, L-Tyrosine, NAC and Taurine are all available right here in our online smartshop. A few amino acids such as L-Dopa are restricted as prescription medicines in New Zealand. To purchase those you would need to ask your doctor for a script to import a 3 month supply.

How to Consume Amino Acid Supplements

As a general rule amino-acids are best taken on an empty stomach (as they compete with other proteins found in food to get across the blood-brain barrier), with the co-factors Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C (and sometimes Magnesium) to enable better absorption and utilization by the brain. Vitamin B6, Vitamin C and Magnesium are all available as dietary supplements right here in our online smartshop.

Amino Acid Safety - Warnings | Contraindications

People with melanomas should not take L-Dopa, Phenylalanine or Tyrosine, as these amino acids may stimulate the growth of those cancers. People with phenylketonuria (PKU) should not take Phenylalanine. Follow dosage and safety guidelines on the products label. Always consult your doctor before taking any kind of supplement.
