Description: Sweet Flag is a strongly aromatic plant with sword shaped leaves. Various species of Sweet Flag grow in marshland and along riverbanks in North America, Asia and Europe. The roots are harvested in spring and late autumn, washed and, after removing the hair-roots, dried at a low temperature before being ground to a powder. Sweet Flag root will last longer if kept in the fridge.

Ethnobotanical History: Sweet Flag is used as a herbal remedy by First Nation American tribes in small doses to fight pain and fatigue, as well as for oral hygiene. In large doses it may have been used as a visionary aid. The Cree claim to take Sweet flag enables them to travel great distances without touching the ground.

Cultivation: Plant in a wet-spot such as under an outside tap or pond edge. Does extremely well here in New Plymouth, cuttings always survive as long as not in a hot dry sunny position so find the dampest part of your place or give some shade and water well. To take cuttings, break up in autumn and replant. Rooting hormone is not required, just plant it straight in the ground.

Shipping Restrictions: We do not ship clones or live plants outside New Zealand.plants .
